|HISTORY||The Bahia was Mission Bay’s first and foremost beach hotel and has celebrated a half-century on the Beach and Bay. The destination beach hotel sprung to life on a prominent piece of peninsula in 1953 and has been attracting generations of vacationers for traditional family-style beach getaways ever since. The bay was little more than a brackish tidal maze when William D. Evans and his wife Anne first journeyed out to the mudflats to survey the possibilities and envision the results. In 1953 the 52-room hotel opened on the white and sandy Mission Bay beach. Another 20 units were added just two years later, and an additional 40 units soon after that. Legions of vacationers arrived to soak up the sun, surf and sport. As Mission Bay grew, helped by the tremendous popularity of the Bahia Hotel, the Evans opened the Catamaran and became operators of the historic Belmont Park on Mission Beach, home to the legendary roller coaster The Giant Dipper.|
